Why I Run…Why Not Run It?

Why I RunWhy Not Run It?

It’s not about why I run the USAF 5K as much as “why not run it.” I’ve never been the athletic type but always thought that my life as a working mom was keeping me active enough. My brain kept insisting I was healthy and fit in spite of what the mirror said. When I finally decided to get in shape by running I googled what I needed to do and started training. I huffed and puffed a lot more than I ever thought I would but kept at it because it felt good anyway.

My first USAF 5K was at age 70 and I ran again the following year. Then, at age 72 and a few weeks before the race, my doctor diagnosed spinal stenosis. Medical advice said no more training runs but I could keep in shape at the gym with cardio and exercises and allow myself the luxury of running a race a couple of times a year.

“My first USAF 5K was at age 70 and I ran again the following year.”

I save those precious yearly runs and now, at age 76, the 2020 version of the USAF 5K (my 5th one) was another day to prove something to myself. Why not run the 5K. I can do it and I do want to be as healthy and fit as I am able to be. It’s exhilarating and fun being with people of all ages who are doing the same thing. The mirror knows nothing.

Why not run the 5K. I can do it and I do want to be as healthy and fit as I am able to be. It’s exhilarating and fun being with people of all ages who are doing the same thing.”
