July 27th, 2021 – 12:30 p.m.

Runners and Supporters: Over the past several months we have seen some significant changes to our COVID-19 environment. This includes lifting of essentially all State of Ohio Public Health mandates related to COVID-19 on June 2, 2021, and Wright-Patterson Air Force Base transitioning to Health Protection Convention Alpha from Bravo given the decreasing case incidence at the start of the summer. However, the nation and the state of Ohio are now starting to see increased numbers of COVID-19 cases primarily driven by the spread of the highly transmissible Delta variant (B.1.167.2).

The USAF Marathon team is committed to running a safe event, and, as part of the goal, we will provide updates to our current COVID-19 situation. Currently on Wright-Patterson Air Force Base there are COVID-19 rules that we are mandated to follow given both federal and Secretary of Defense regulations.

Mask use – If you are unvaccinated, you need to wear a mask. If you are unvaccinated and actively running an event, you do not need to have the mask in place, but please resume mask wear when you get to the finish line. For this reason, we recommend that you bring several disposable masks as the race team will not be supplying them.

Physical distancing – Although a race with thousands of runners and supporters makes it very difficult to maintain physical distancing at all times, we ask that you space out (greater than 6-feet) from those outside of your household as much as possible. COVID-19 transmission is greatly reduced outdoors, but we want to be sure that all participants space out when they can. Avoid congregating in large groups around concessioners and attractions. Our race team is actively working through plans to ensure that we maximize opportunities for physical distancing whenever possible.

Our team is meeting regularly to discuss any updates and the rapidly evolving COVID-19 situation. As race weekend approaches we will update this area of the website with any changes or recommendations.

All three of the COVID-19 vaccinations are still under emergency use authorization – which implies that they are optional. However, we encourage all of our runners and supporters to consider vaccination before the race. If you have doubts, questions, or concerns about the vaccines – seek out trusted sources of information like your medical provider and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention so you can make an informed decision on vaccination.

The United States Air Force Marathon team realizes that the COVID-19 pandemic can create uncertainty and questions regarding the race in September.

It is our goal to create the safest possible event environment.  We are working with 88 ABW leadership and 88 Medical Group Public Health to incorporate current Ohio Department of Health (ODH) “Responsible RestartOhio” protocols and Wright-Patterson Event and Gathering Guidance into the weekend’s events.

Given the pandemic’s dynamic nature, nobody can predict what our situation will be in September, but our team will plan to frequently update this site to reflect our COVID-19 mitigation plan.  In accordance with current local and state recommendations, we are going to practice core COVID-19 non-pharmaceutical strategies which include:

  • Enhanced sanitization
  • Mask wear in accordance with ODH protocols
  • Physical distancing

With a few simple adjustments, we are confident that we will have a successful and safe Air Force Marathon this year!  Again, please check back frequently, especially before the race to ensure that you have the most up-to-date information.

Additional details can be found at the ODH website and specific Responsible RestartOhio protocols can be viewed here.
