Over 1,000 have already registered for 2009 Air Force Marathonby James Baker Registration for the 2009 United States Air Force Marathon is already in full swing and if the early numbers are any indication, it is going to be another record-breaking year for the 13th annual run. 1,129 participants have already registered for the September 19 extravaganza, which by comparison is well ahead of last year’s figure of 861. Marathon Director Molly Louden says she thinks this is the year they may finally hit the coveted 10,000 participation barrier, but needs the Wright-Patterson community to step up and make it happen. “I think it’s important to remember we have distances for all types of runners and walkers,” said Louden, who noted the 5k is 3.1 miles, the 10k 6.2 miles, the half is 13.1 miles and of course the full marathon is 26.2 miles long. “Coming up with a goal and making a commitment by registering is what helps make a person successful.” “The Air Force is stressing fitness on all levels from the active duty to civilians. Fitness should not stop with the individual who works on base, but should include the entire family.” Louden said she had seven members of her family participate in last year’s event in all different races and other relatives who came out to cheer them on. She also said the marathon is designed for all ages and skill levels. “This is a participatory event where the elite runner is at the same start line as you. The elite runner is experiencing the same run as you. Each individual has their goal and when they cross the finish line we celebrate with them at the post race festival and finisher’s medal presentation.” She added that the running industry is one of the few areas that have not been affected by the current struggling financial climate we all face. “Running or walking and staying healthy are the best thing to do in this type of economy,” she said. The hobby of many is also one of the less financially stressful of all activities because there is not much expense to going out and training. A good pair of shoes, running clothes and some water is all you need to get started. The best time to register is now. Fees will increase on the first of June.
